All I Want for Christmas
Kate had a great time sitting on Santa's lap. She has a habit of not acknowledging the person holding her, so she didn't even notice him at first. But once she did, she wanted his glasses with every fiber of her being. Finally she gave up and was quite content (as indicated by her finger sucking) playing with the pom pom on the end of his hat. I think she left a good impression, so hopefully Santa will bring her what she wants for Christmas...her two front teeth.

My lessons in Motherhood
It’s official-Kate is teething. Hearing other mom’s teething horror stories has prepared me for the worst: sleepless nights, constant crankiness, just an all over rough time. Kate’s teething experience has lived up to most of these expectations. I didn’t, however, expect her teething to be an experience that would bring me closer to my Heavenly Father.
Tonight was a particularly hard night. Kate just wouldn’t calm down, even though I knew she was super tired. At about 11:30 pm, after multiple failed attempts to get her to sleep, I found myself once again rocking her, trying to calm her down. I felt like I needed some advice on how to best handle this situation, so I prayed as I rocked her. I prayed for guidance that I might know whether Kate was teething, overtired, sick, or just in a bad sleep habit. I immediately heard the words “It’s ok to cuddle her tonight.” I felt impressed that she is teething and needs to be comforted and to feel loved. My eyes filled with tears as I held her close during this communion with the Holy Ghost. Then I thought about how much I love her, and how precious my time is with her. I wished I could stop time in that instant-to always remember the joy, love, and peace I felt. I watched her closely, felt her tiny body against mine, trying to absorb all the details of the moment. Someday in the future, probably a lot sooner than I realize, Kate will be all grown up and I won’t be able to hold her and rock her to sleep. I won’t be able to comfort and soothe her so easily.
That thought made me sad at first, but then I realized that although the future will be different, it will also be full of joyful and memorable experiences. I’m just grateful for the chance I had tonight to learn that I need to appreciate what I have right now, and to enjoy the moment. What a blessing it is to be a mother.
